Kokorico by Jean Paul Gaultier is a Woody Aromatic fragrance for men. Kokorico was launched in 2011. Kokorico was created by Olivier Cresp and Annick Menardo. Top note is Fig Leaf; middle notes are Cacao and Patchouli; base notes are Vetiver and Virginia Cedar.

Jean Paul Gaultier finally launches his brand new masculine fragrance in September 2011. The fragrance is named Kokorico, which is the French onomatopoeia for rooster’s cry (“Cock-a-doodle-doo” in English).

Created in collaboration with Puig and Firmenich’s perfumers Olivier Cresp and Annick Menardo, Kokorico is designed as a powerful and explosive aphrodisiac, emphasizing woody and cocoa notes. Kokorico represent an olfactory "cry": „the boastful cry of a rooster, the conquering cry of a man-warrior, the cry of a young man filled with pleasure…”

The top of the composition features refreshing fig leaves, which provide energy, the heart is filled with raw cocoa, which stimulates (not the artificially sweet kind, but a natural extract), while woody notes of patchouli, cedar and vetiver express their masculinity and power.

Black, red and feathers are flamboyant, cocky and dramatic elements of inspiration for the package and the campaign design. The bottle is shaped like a sculpture of a male head from one side, and it looks like a torso from the other perspective. The face of the campaign shot by Jean-Baptiste Mondino is model Jon Kortajarena.

The fragrance is available as 50 and 100 ml Eau de Toilette with an accompanying collection of body care products (deodorant, shower gel, aftershave lotion).

Very unique scent it might not be the most mass appealing jpg perfume but i like it although i rarely get to use it but i do enjoy wearing it whenever i do

yukitanonton

My favorite of all JPG fragrances, male or female. Such an underrated beauty.

R.diggity

Banger. Gummy fig opening. Very dark powdery cacao and vetiver. Earthy yet very wearable

This my first time ‘reviewing’ or commenting on any scent here even though I’ve been enjoying them for nearly 30 years. I wanted this fragrance to be my first because I believe, with every fibre of my being, that it’s criminally underrated. Warm and cosy although admittedly probably not for younger guys. Still a masterpiece.

I've had this perfume for a long time, but I haven't used it much.
Today I bought Tom Ford Noir and wanted to compare it with something similarly unconventional.
Oh people, what a masterpiece Cocorico is compared to noir.
Dark strong, and it's Cocoa and patchouli.
Not for today's teenage tastes, but considering when they were released, it was a great move.
I have many perfumes, more than 100, and it's special. I can't think of anything similar.
It takes 2-3 wearing them to fully understand it.
I'm sure that who once used up a full bottle, then comes back to them, because it is difficult to replace them with something else.
If you have more than 10 fragrances and have already developed a nose,
at least buy a sample to find that day and relax with this scent in the evening.
This is not a fragrance for people who like fresh, summer scents.
Unless you are looking for a typical stronger perfume for the evening.

Look at the fragrance notes, if you associate them with other perfumes, and they are vibes you feel good in then buy a bottle.

Cocoa Patchouli done right.

I am a Patchouli lover ever since I've acquired A*Men pretty early on in my journey. The darkness and the bitterness and the earthiness of the patchouli just were very different from what I was more used to wearing at the time. I did not care for any negative comments I might get from my peers, because "we are all wearing fragrances for ourselves" right?

LIDGE, Pardon and Tempo are all within the similar vicinity with this one. This I feel is the second most wearable next to LIDGE (Guerlain is truly magical), but these two are very close to one another.

Kokorico boasts perfect balance between cocoa and earthy, borderline-dirty patchouli and warm woods. A masterful creation.

Alongside L'Occitane Bois Flott, Hermes' H24, Kenzo, Acua di Gio, Terre d Hermes, and Hexensalbe, Kokorico is up there. I often layer it with Hexensalbe, or show it off alongside Kenzo sometimes. Sometimes with Terre d'Hermes. It's earthy, and warm, and FUN!

Some write that its for night-time, but I think a vibrant personality can get away with it during the day-time or even at work. Especially alongside, a more sophisticated scent like something from L'Occitane or Hermes.

Between the fig, patchouli, and cacao... it's brilliant. I don't own anything like it. It like tobacco without tobacco. It's earthy AND fun, which is a hard combination to obtain. It has a certain soil fragrance which is refreshing. I love this fragrance all year round. Only available it EDT, but it's enough as an EDT. The fig is the key component that brings this whole thing together.

FUN AND Earthy. I started with a small version, but since its been discontinued has to move up to the 3.3 oz to ensure I don't run out. I wish it were re-continued. I hope its available for a while longer. Fun bottle too. Looking forward to a 3.3 oz. spray nozzle as opposed to the splash bottle only in the small version.

Luv this one.

Bought my first can in 2015/16, gave it out and luckily bought a 2nd can in 2017... at giveaway prices in Nigeria.

Bought 2 cans each of Kokorico and Kokorico by Night.... the last in stock at Ghana duty free shop! 1 bottle left I think!

Lovely package. I am well, not great at descriptions.

dcjimr

I get mostly vetiver and patchouli from this fragrance, with little whiffs of a dry cocoa and some green notes. For an EDT it seems to last a very long time. I would never mistake this for a niche fragrance, but it does strike me as better than most designer scents. Plus, there are not any of those annoying scratchy aroma chemicals (looking at you, ambroxan) to ruin the mix.

Zentz

What a beautiful craft..delicious cacao buried deep inside some dark green woods. Not much out there like it! Don't go right up close after you spray, the real seduction is in the dry down. Instant favorite for me. Annick and Olivier I salute you.

For the simple fact that I LOVE this despite disliking patchouli/earthy notes, this is a feat of perfumery. A masterpiece. Either that or my taste is changing. This has sat in my collection for probably 5 years and I *did* like it at first, just didn't think I could pull it off as a girl in her 20's. Now I just don't care. It smells good so I'm gonna start wearing it :)

edit: Just remembered Annick Ménardo is the perfumer. No wonder I love it.

brandonR

A dusty, sweet, earthy greenhouse. If anyone dislikes Kokorico, they probably shouldn’t be in this hobby honestly. It’s an easy wear. Between the original and “By Night”, this one is the champion. No point in seeking out the rare flanker unless you’re rich. They’re 95% the same scent. So much so that you can’t help to think that “By Night” was the epitome of a text book cash grab.

Regardless for many who may not know yet, the Kokorico bottle holds a secret. View the bottle from its side (thicker side facing you), and see the outline of the original Le Male bottle. Fun stuff!

nxxdle

Gorgeous, intoxicating. It strongly reminds me of Dior's Fahrenheit, but cleaner - distinct notes of cocoa and patchouli but also a hint of gasoline, though the latter appears to be just in my nose. I like the bottle too - a little art piece.

Heinrich_B

It does resembles L'instant de geurlain edt and eau extreme, but slightly, and after an hour or so of wearing.
I feel it similar to black xs also, being that sweet and such a designerish fragrance.
I can see this as a very loved fragrance, by many, yet for me it doesn t do much.

LPerry72

Chocolatey patchouli done in a appealing way. This smells very designer, and is sadly not as good as Linstant de Guerlain. Still, it’s a great choice, and I love the bottle design.

I have to admit, I bought this fragrance because of its bottle and the red can compartment. At the first sniff, I thought it was a just okay scent, but when I had a chance to wear it, I can't stop myself to keep sniffing my wrist. Addicted but simple. Like so many people I also get the spiciness but according to Fragrantica, there isn't spice note listed at all. Woody spicy, green fig leaves, and aromatic with touch of cacao.
Such a masterpiece from Annick Menardo and Olivier Cresp

Interesting combination of equal patchouli and vetiver, the rest of the listed notes stay in the periphery. Its summer now so I am looking forward to seeing what cooler temperatures will do to this. I will find something to layer this with to tweak it into more feminine territory to suit me better but in general, can’t beat a good patchouli..

Riggs81

This is a masterpiece. Niche quality and I cant stop smelling it as it drys. Truly addictive. So disappointed it was discontinued. I am currently looking for another bottle if anyone wants rid of theirs. Dark, earthy with gorgeous fig note and a chocolate dry down. So different and a great signature scent. Please re release JPG!

maps

Starts off with a very polarizing fig leaf opening. The smell makes me think of a leaf oozing a milky sap after being broken, but a sharp kind, almost like paint or some kind of chemical solvent.

After the top note fades, the mid of cocoa and patchouli shines. The patchouli smells leafy green and soil-like. The cocoa adds light sweetness, like a dusting of cinnamon sugar. The mid is very dark, attractive and masculine.

The base notes of vetiver and cedar smell like clean paper with a light woodiness.

I like wearing this scent anytime during the winter and fall, and on cool spring and summer nights.
In my opinion, this is a nice accessory for someone wearing dark clothes, formal or casual, who wants a nice "masculine" and mysterious type of scent. It must be noted again however, that the fig leaf opening may not be to everyone's taste.

Please Bring this back. There is no one like this one.JPG hear me😩🤩🙏🏼🙏🏼

BGBG

Very very nice fragrance. A refined version of LIDGE. I love it.

Unmodernize

This is simply another classic that has faced the graveyard too early, like many many other beautiful creations before it.

I didn't like this when it came out, because I was more into fresh acuatics then. But it was never bad, and I ordered samples recently to remind me of this.

Both this and the night version which is very close but more intense, are great original scents. And in line with JPGs more daring approach he used to have yesteryear which was so cool.

Today I feel that it is brands like Paco Rabanne, Herrera and Moschino (all spanish?) are the ones pushing the fragrance game forwards.

ItalianRefinement

An Italian-ised version of L'Instant Pour Homme Guerlain. Brighter and greener. with the same cozy basenotes, and as not as suffocating. Unfortunately, it lies in deserted territory in terms of commercial interest. I love it !

The best and the beast!

MngoTango2021

Ok. This one is a serious trip for me. I bought this fragrance about 2 weeks ago off someone online. Upon spraying, It smelled like the worst pine cleaner-went stale smell I'd ever smelled. I flipped out on the guy who sold it to me, not
realizing yet what I was about to discover. I read somewhere online that sometimes if left to long, the fragrance that is in the straw part of the atomizer can oxidate and cause the juice in it to go stale. So I held the bottle over the garbage bag and pumped out about 10 sprays. I am very happy to say that the fragrance now smells exactly as described in notes and to what other users are smelling, and there is definitely something very special about it! The question is where do I feel most suited rocking this frag? Probably at a COTTAGE. It really isn't the kind of fragrance I would want to wear on a date or at the club. That said, I have not tried to wear it out to a bar a club, so I don't know what reactions would be like. I did end up apologizing to the guy I bought it from.

kelementamas8

Little bit disappointed, because I paid too much, just to test some discontinued frag, but what can I say, JPG has a big space in my heart, so I just had to...too many frag that I can mention that smells almost just like this like Tom Ford (for men), Antonio Banderas The Secret Temptation, it shares some vibes with Encre Noir even and of course in that line Terre d'Hermès. So what can I say for around 160 EUR? It's peppery and medicinal like, just like others said it's like the damp dark earth, nothing sweet, no fougere or anything, in a way Kokorico is in it's own lane, but can't be unique, sorry to say. Very 80s like vibes, more so 70s, maybe the cause of discontinuation, is that it didn't fit the classic JPG olfactory sensation, that the company is known for today (you know bubbly and sweet stuff), but then why design something so unique, meaning that the name and the bottle is fantastic in my eyes, maybe we'll never know. Sorry for babbling too much, but I love to hunt for discontinued frags, and I had to get it out, that it's just not special to fork out so much cash.

ana.zaazoo

how come u appreciate givenchy very irresistable and pass this one,it is the bitter side of givenchy,it deserves at least checking.

J_Owen

For me the first minute starts off with a juicy, semi sweet, watery realistic berry note. The berry is all that I get and it's fantastic. After the quick introduction a warm dry cinnamon (how is this not listed?) comes out of nowhere and completely dominates the top. Supporting the cinnamon is a vetiver and patchouli combination to give it an earthy darkness. I also smell a rounded off cypress (guessing this is the fig leaf) providing a green slightly sour accord. In the dry down I get mostly cinnamon and the cacao note finally reveals itself providing a dark baker chocolate vanilla-like sweetness. The woods stay softly in the background supporting the composition and come off creamy.

I own the vintage and current version of LIDG (L"instant) and I really don't see any similarity to be honest. The cacao note in LIDG is a soft, floating, coco powder with a fresh lemon type citrus opening and an elegant patchouli drydown. I'm a fan of Kokorico but I think it's a completely different beast. It's raw, dark, dirty, spicy, earthy, and unique. If I had to compare it to anything I own it most resembles (and it's a bit of a reach) it would be Davidoff Zino with cinnamon and more modern. If you are planning on picking this up I wouldn't wait much longer the stocks of the 1.7oz seem to be drying up pretty fast.

seachase

One of the most exquisitely blended designer fragrances ever released. So sad to see it discontinued, as I would choose this masterpiece over any of Gaultier's endless "Le Male" series.
Been stocking up on it, even though the average price for the 3.3 oz. is now $80. or higher and rapidly increasing. (used to get it on sale for around $40)
I am determined to have enough of this "cacao and fig leaf" master blend to last me the rest of my life.
I do love it dearly.
Perhaps Gaultier will re-release it one day, in one of the iconic Le Male bottles and call it "Cacao Le Male."

Abry_81

I must admit that I am a fan of most of Annick Menardo's creations, and recently willing to get some discontinued fragrances that I could still find in stores in my country, I went for Kokoriko.
When I put it on my skin I knew perfectly why this rare fragrance was discontinued and that is that for the year it came out and the Gaultier standards (especially in the time of Puig) this is a "rara avis" in their army of "Le male" this fragrance can be perfectly niche, it is a dark scent with an almost organic earthy taste that opens with a cocoa-patchouli combo that lasts throughout its life, the cocoa here is not sweet, for those who do not know the cocoa beans Toasted and grated they do not have a sweet taste or smell but rather bitter and dusty, this facet here is accentuated by patchouli and a very natural and organic vetiver. I do not know the fig plants so I do not know what the smell of their leaves is (one of the main components of this essence) but without a doubt this fragrance combines that facet of cocoa powder and patchouli with a green, sharp, wild touch with an almost milky touch and not at all sweet, all this on a slightly woody base of cedar.
The components of this fragrance are very well balanced, none stands out above the others, all are perfectly detectable but none is the protagonist, but rather they dance in unison during the life of this fragrance that is quite linear and has a decent duration with a moderate projection, rather perfect. for night use any time of year.
His bottle never seemed very attractive to me, like his wrong campaign that had nothing to do with that feathered Jon Kortajarena with what this dark glass hides in the shape of a face (they say it is Gaultier's face) and that as a curiosity it has to do when we put the back bottle features the silhouette of the iconic Le male.
100% recommended for those looking for a fragrance out of the ordinary, by concepción designer but with a niche soul.

Golcher

I didn't have much expectations for this one as it's poorly rated and it went by with no guts nor glory. You don't hear ANYONE talking about this and there must be a reason it was discontinued and forgotten by the fragrance world however, as a collector I'm always interested in discontinued frags or any obscure things I can get my hands on as long as the price is reasonable and I found a 50ml BNIB for about $40 so I went for it and after all, it'd be nice to have a JPG in my collection that doesn't have 'Male' in the name.

The bottle is a little tacky but it's also really nice, it's a gimmick but a nice one for that matter. Presentation is great, it comes in a tin can that you may expect from a niche fragrance and the bottle is a glossy black that is a face in the front but if you see by the side it's identical to the Le Male torso which is really cool but you don't buy a fragrance for the bottle right? what about the juice? The juice is amazing, I get this dark chocolaty feel, patchouli and vetiver some fig and it goes along amazingly, it's very artisty and beautifully crafted.

Performance is good, 7-8 hours in my skin and the projection is just right, not beast mode (it won't offend others) but it's not skin scent. All in all this is a great surprise, my recognition to the perfumers for another well crafted scent, waaaaaaay ahead of its time and perhaps that says something about its early demise. To me this kind of resembles Nasomatto Pardon but with some designer sensibilities, I can't praise this enough

mapache

Pulled this out of hiding today.....after a long time.
I have forgotten about it...???.....Why?
Well, because I own like 500+ bottles of fragrance.....so a lot of the scents will be "ignored"...indirectly.
With all that being said...
Kokorico...is still...IMO..a MASTERPIECE !!!

brandonR

My favorite Fall scent! I just love the damn juice!! That is all.

imissaramis

I just think one of the most underrated fragrances . So many textures to it leafy earthy cocoa’y , then the cedar patchouli. Not as smooth as lidge, or Pardon (not sure he smooth is always considered a good thing , sometime we all like a bit of bite) but I genuinely prefer it . I always (sometimes) get compliments with this . Saw a review below calling this ‘generic’ I just can’t fathom that . Similarly the ‘challenging’ moniker . Anyway each to their own . In my top 10 , at least .

@Perfumecritic
"How many more powdery chocolate woody smells can we have without anything new being added to the conversation?"
I may not be able to stand some of the publishers you state to have written for, however I do agree with this sentiment. In the sense that I disagree with it. Wait, what? Allow me to explain. The problem that I have with it is not the woodchocolate, which I am going to run and trademark right after finishing this sentence, but to a lesser extent that there is a kind of wine accord perhaps as a result of the cocoa and geranium. I am actually bothered more by a scented shaving foam accord in the later stages that I, albeit somewhat amplified, recently experienced when I sampled a certain striped fragrance from the same company for the second time only after a long time around when it was released. And what I believe to have realised is that I do not remember to have smelled it or to have smelled it in this way, way back when. And that this might be a relatively inexpensive and artificial current base of this company.

eaudemale

This is a woody fougere fragrance. It starts with an odd freshness from the fig leaf that it's not very prominent. The cocoa note is very nutty, it's the nut here and not the chocolate with an earthy tone from the patchouli and lots, lots of cedar. Jesus Christ, this stuff has cedar for days..If you like cedar, this is a great one because it smells very natural and you can detect every note... but not my cup of tea.

mjhazard23

Extremely good fragrance that was the victim of a poor name and marketing. I don’t get Layton but do get similarities to Halfeti and Pure Malt. Awesome bottle design.

Gas2408

tandem_4x4

is it good for women (I mean unisex enough)?

saatwik

I wrote a disparaging review of this fragrance a while back, but, recently, I got a full bottle which was on a hefty discount and ended up loving it.

The lesson here is to never make your mind up based on how a fragrances smells off a scent strip. Off the strip, it smelled herbal and leafy and NOT in a good way.

Off skin and in the air, it's a different story. After a 5 second burst of pungency, it goes to a shaving cream like vibe and progresses to show cocoa facets further on. The cocoa is partnered by a hefty dose of greenness owing to fig leaf and patchouli. The drydown is almost entirely patchouli.

This green cocoa structure is beautiful and not really terribly offensive either. It is possible that this fragrance was reformulated because it seems to have been extremely polarizing earlier. Also, I really find no similarities to LIDGE - fact which also might support the reformulation hypothesis.

The projection is not heavy but it does last a long time especially on clothes. Definitely worth getting at the discounted prices you might find it for, right now.

ajagrze

Sb's mentioned Layton and I must admit they were spot on. The notes are different but the overall structure is built around similar tensions, with Layton being the more modern alternative ingredients-wise. I actually prefer Kokorico out of the two. It's cheaper and more focused. Even though it's not likely to garner as many complinemts as Parfums de Marly's offering (due to the lack of the synthetics that are in vogue right now), it's still worth checking out. It won't cost you an arm and a leg and seems to have been discontinued, so... yep, grab it while there's still a chance. Oh, and the bottle is so strange it's actually kinda cool.

wolfxm3

A definite winter fragrance. Any chocolate lover will give you compliments and might try to bite you aswell!

Jokes aside, it's a woody, powdery perfume it's opening you can feel the fog leaf and as it starts to dry down it turns into a woodsy, cacoa scent. Has quite a nice Sillage and not ideal for office use.

Top notes : fig leaves.

Middle notes : patchouli, cacao.

Base notes : Virginia ceder, vetiver.

Longlevity : 5hrs on skin 7+hrs on clothes (do not spray on white clothes as it will stain)

Projection : arms length.

Weather : winter.

Compliments : 8/10

zhiang0113

A damp, loamy patchouli at its heart, but adorned by cocoa powder which fades away pretty quickly into a powdery scent which tampers the dankness of the patchouli.

Projection is decent, but not quite as loud as I expected based on the reviews here.

moseskst

1. Pour 1 cup of cocoa and 1 cup of garden soil into bottle
2. Add 1 teaspoon of water and mix
3. ...
4. Profit!

Jokes aside, it’s actually pretty good. Definitely not a crowd pleaser. Peasants will think you’re a cocoa plantation worker but connoisseurs will welcome you into their club.

Donjuandemarco

Yes discontinued!..

I can see this being, like Gucci PH I, YSL M7 etc.. craved in next decade. So wouldn't be surprised if people will set an asking price for this devil 200€ in near future. Pinned!

teoteddy1

Typical example of creativity gone too far. It resembles something I'd rather eat than smell like. Not unpleasant by any stretch of imagination, but not something I would see myself wearing for any occasion.

gatsby

stunning cocoa and fig leaf mix, deep, dense, with great projection and +8h longevity. BUT, for the first edition only, before reformulation. 2011-2014 ( some 2014 bottles could be reformulated as well, so the best and 100% secure are 2011-2013 batches). it s a unique fragrance, for sure, similar in DNA with LIDGE but also diferent in the evolution. The reformulation simply destroyied this fragrance, recipe and performances and the poor sales in the last years is the explanation for the discontinuation of this fragrance, since summer 2018.
Beautiful bottle, amazing package and impressive scent for the first editions.
Goodbye, Kokorico!

yafresh

opening spray smells like straight dirt!
give it 5 min and it turns into a clean earthy smell. perfect for the fall or spring

Duftfreak

It doesnt cost much money but it smels like expensive perfume. Niche like. Unique.

92juanjavier

Far away from my style of fragrances but I can't deny that is very pure and original in all ways, at least for me.
VERY different of anything else that Jean Paul Gaultier have in his collection but I guess that's good.
The cacao note on this perfume is very pure, good, rich and very strong, the purest cacao I ever smell on a fragrance.
I also smell too strong the note of fig leaf, that I personaly detest, not on this fragrance but I have a fig tree in my yard and I hate the smell of its leaves, BUT I like the smell in Kokorico.
In the moment I wear it, if I close my eyes I feel like it is taking me to the countryside, full of fig trees and close to a chocolate factory.
I hope Gaultier risks it again and creates new original perfumes like this one and ends with the flankers of Le Male.
Well, this isn't my cup of tea from Gaultier's fragrances but I like it.
This was my second fragrance from my collection of the house of the genius Jean Paul Gaultier.

muminharoon

A ballsy bomb of patchouli and damp cocoa. Huge initial projection and sillage. Bold and different. For the guy who loves big fragrances and isn't afraid to be seen as quirky.

RobbieX

This is a dry, woody perfume. Mainly cedar, but hardly any cocoa. It's pleasant enough but no WOW factor here.

Guinea54

Don't listen to ratings, always test for yourself.. I got this and enjoy it a lot.. It reminds me of layton by parfums de marly. Has a similar type of vibe. Layton smells like a combo of this and something like polo red intense mixed.. but the main backbone def reminds me of kokorico... This is a good alternative to that or something like burberry london.. It fits the same bill for me.. I really think it's a great scent..

Edit: Just to clarify, this is more dry and less sweet than layton, but layton reminds me of this scent with polo red intense on top.. I like both.. but this one does more magic in the air than if you smell it right up close. up close this might turn away some people because of its dry and almost bitter smell.. I love it tho

For such a unique name & bottle, the smell is quite...plain.

A mildly woody-spicy, mild smell of cocoa. No note overtly stands out to give it an obvious theme. The drydown is linear; the same from start to finish. A*Men comes to mind when I smell it. The same woody spicy gourmand smell, although altered here.

I really tried to like it. I sprayed it on a paper tissue & kept it for 24 hours, smelling it every few hours. I, also, wore it for an occasion just to give it fair chance. It is still a plain "meh" to me.

It is not a bad scent. Not at all. It's not gorgeous. Just plainly nice.

Decent performance, too.

This is the kind if perfume I want the "Neutral" button for it to exist. Not a like, not a dislike.

& by the way, Kokorocio doesn't hold a candle to Guerlain's LIDGE.

Life is too short to wear a perfume you don't really like.

echo4kilo

I got a sample of Kokorico from Luckyscent. It has a clean almost pine tree smell, with other pleasant wood smells, has as smell that reminds me of cooking lobsters while camping in Maine.

MsKayJae

To me this is Covet's richer, darker cousin. Both are well made and greatly polarizing cheapies. A nice woody dark cocoa scent best worn in the depths of winter.

vaibsankhla

This is a great patchouli cocoa combo.
More patchouli than any other note.
Kinda dry and sweet ( like cocoa powder lol)
Does have slightly herbal background (?absinthe/wormwood)

Decent overall to be honest.
Maybe not as refined as LIDGE but still pretty decent.
Average to good performance
Hard to love though. BUT I feel the hate is unjustified.

Very risky in designer realm, but stays true to JPG branding.

Overall 7/10
Good casual wear in fall season.

This perfume is so not my style and something I would never seek out on purpose but I made the mistake of spraying it on my arm about 6 weeks ago, just out of curiosity. What could the juice inside a bottle that looks like this possibly smell like?

With zero knowledge of the notes, the first thing I detected was banana-RUM and a figgy/fig leaves kind of feeling. No one else on this page has mentioned a banana smell so I guess it's just me.

The alcohol/RUM vibe evaporated within the first few minutes thankfully and I was reminded then by Angel (Mugler.) I liked it, but I was confused by it and wandered back to the women's perfume section and proceeded to cover every inch of my arms with a million different perfumes.

The next week, I was compelled to visit the Kokorico tester again. Will it smell like bananas and rum this time? It did! And more like figs and more like cocoa once the opening transitioned into the dry-down (a 2-5 minute process.) And that squeaky note? Vetiver. I looked it up on Fragrantica on my cellphone and suddenly I could notice all 5 of the notes quite clearly (which kind of supports my theory that many of the notes we think we smell can just be the psychology of suggestion.)

So for the next 6 weeks, every time I go to the perfume store, I kept ending up wandering into the men's section and re-visiting Kokorico, each time saying "No, I have enough men's cologne, plus I hate vetiver, no, just no!!" but today a 50ml little black bottle finally came home with me.

I think this can definitely be a unisex perfume even though it's very masculine and not too sweet. To me, this is like if you took Mugler's Angel and stripped away EVERYTHING except the chocolate note and the patchouli and removed whatever mystery factor it has that makes exactly 50% of the population adore it and the other 50% HATE it, and replaced it with a cozy, comforting fig note that no one would dare complain about, you would get something like this.

I think for a woman, this is definitely more of a winter scent, though I'd like to see how a man smells in this on a hot summer day. I imagine it being a sort of sexual musky sweaty-sexy due to the male body/skin chemistry. (Not trying to sound sexist, I hope you guys understand what I mean, talking strictly biology here.)

So yeah, definitely unisex. Sillage 2+ feet. Longevity 4-6hrs. Transitions from boozy to cocoa-ey into a soft figgy- skinscent as the time passes. For the price, safe to blind-buy if you're into Mugler or JPG. Good for date-night for guys.

jacek.drewnowski

I couldn't agree less with those who say people praise this frag only due to the JPG's brand on it. I'm sure I would have liked it a lot even as a no-name product. And not because it's the first perfume in which I am able to smell and name almost all of the notes listed in the pyramid (which is not that hard, as there are only five of them, but still makes me proud). The opening is fig leaf, big time. In the company of some cocoa. The fig leaf is so prominent that it helped me to learn to recognise this note in other fragrances where it's not so much pronounced. After 15-30 minutes the balance starts to lean towards the cocoa. As others have written, it's not chocolate, but definitely cocoa. And the patchouli is also there. But the cocoa is the note that characterises the frag throughout it's lifetime on me, because it's there even after 6+ hours, when it has long become a skin scent with vetiver and something else which according to the pyramid must be Virginia cedar.

@ Konga500

Hi again Konga. It seems that we meet again now in the Kokorico page.
I am sory to say but, by your review, you must have bought a very bad fake of this fregrance. If it is as bad as you say just throw it away as it seems to be pure poison (but not Pure Poison from Dior).
My Kokorico - as almost all Hermes fragrances - smells divine and very similar to another divine fragrance called L'instant de Guerlain pour Homme Eau Extreme.
Better luck next time.

Konga5000

Smells like a fake plastic Hersey Bar. Then the dry-down smells very synthetic like Dakker Noir and to ad insult to injury- longevity is not good!

Robert Goode

"If you don't know...now u know!"
IMO☺
One of the best cold weather fig/cacao fragrances ....(for the price).....niche or designer! ....Eyes Closed!!!! Beautifully done...Annick!
purchased2013.

Shugenja

This has one of the best openings in all of perfumery. The cacao is great. Four minutes (I timed it.) later the cacao and fig leaf has been submerged in a terrible patchouli. I do not enjoy the shift from sensual to moldy.

I am from a rural home and my grandparents raised chickens. I am not reminded of the merging of night into daybreak. I am reminded of chickens scratching in their own nightsoil for worms.

I gambled on a blindbuy based on my admiration for both Olivier Cresp and Annick Menardo. I dislike being so harsh, but I am thoroughly disappointed. I hate this. Kokorico is completely worthless to me. Nothing but regret. Please sample before purchase.

Kokorico ages beautifully. When i first tested it back in 2011 upon its release i was disappointed to say the least. I did not have that many fragrances back then, and my taste was mostly limited to orientals/fougeres (Rochas Man, A*Men, Esencia, Rive Gauche, Krizia Uomo, Nemo...) I was getting myself initiated in the wonderful life and art of fragrances.
At that time I was not prepared for this dry, raw and bitter creation. It smelt strange but not in a way i found comfortable. Since then i have sprayed Kokorico randomly and just did it now again. It is excellent. The fragrance is all about the cocoa with the fig and patchouly exaggerating the raw greenness of the composition. It's still not a love, but i cannot deny its quality and the fact that i like it more and more.

Strangely I get a somber sensation out of it (more in the context of Or Black) than a feeling of a new day awakening which the story behind the release implies. And i believe Gaultier tried to fix that with the second Kokorico (which to keep in line with the dissonance is called by Night)
And to think that this is the only pillar fragrance for men (Monsieur being the other) from Gaultier that is not a reinvention of Le Male (though the bottle winks otherwise)

It would be hard to put it better than @jiksjiks1 did by describing this scent as "cacao on wet earth after raining in the forest." Spot on.

It's cocoa for sure, but almost a powdery cocoa, offset by the patchouli, which gets a bit stronger during the dry down. It's not a harsh or in your face cocoa smell at all, it's very subtle and warm.

The vetiver, cedar, and fig leaf start to emerge about 20 minutes after application, and the whole bouquet comes together very nicely.

I get a decent 4-5 hours of longevity here, but with a scent as subtle as this one, don't expect it to project very far. That's not a mark against this scent, I don't think, because you wouldn't want a fragrance like this to be overpowering.

jiksjiks1

Ya. Kokorico like you are smelling cacao on wet earth after raining in the forest.
Very unique. I could wear this everytime.
Too bad my girlfriend doesn't like this.
Longevity is good. People can notice the smell easily but it's not overpower fragrance.

Suprisingly!! This has an amber note that remind me
A lot jean paul dupont ambre oriental
And armaf niche oud ,very round warm woodsy amber.
Very high quality this one.
So.. A lot of reviws nothing much
I can add..
Its like combination of a fruty fig fig leaf and dry fig a bit of cocoa.(my imagination but thats the effect you know)
All blended wonderfully its really for all
Ages very casual and very versatile.

This is butifull. and is high quality and also yes niche scent.
9 hours and i still get good wiffs and its
Very noticable on the skin.
Projection is very good like arm and a half for 3 hours.

Shugenja

I fear I have a poor batch, or I am a 'hater'. Mine smells just as described below for five minutes: cocoa and fig leaf. The top does remind me of LIDG. But after five minutes all I smell is the cedar and patchouli combining to smell just like the laundry basket with wet clothes allowed to mildew. It is yucky on my skin and clothing.

The opening is nice. The rest is alarmingly bad.
I will try again in a few weeks to see if opening the cap improves it.

Donjuandemarco

0-5 min: fig leaf gives earthy dry feeling
5-15 min: chocholate comes in the game sweet bit dry green woods
15min-4 hours: Woody sour bitter chocolate with green earthyness
4-8 hours: skin scent but very very pleasent

Not everyones cup of tea. Will be in my collection till i live

5 years from now when it's discontinued, people are gonna crave for it. Treasure it when it's still alive. Just saying

This is so well done! The bottle looks fantastic and the scent - I have finished my first bottle in just one month by only spraying it on my hand and sniffing all day long. Now I have a second bottle, which I have started to wear regularly. So much pleasure with only a few ingredients - fantastic.

razmale_kl

the very first time i smell this. 'ughh!! can't stand it.' harsh and nasty. a big NO!

shavenonthedarkside

Second Review: It was on my mind LOL.

This fragrance is a great subtle fragrance. This is for people that really want to smell something out of the norm that does not carry a heavy price tag, and does not shout "I am HERE!!"

You can spray 7/8 times with this due to the price and scent strength (mild). The initial scent, or top notes, do smell reminiscent of fresh potting soil lol. That is in 1st couple of minutes. Plus, it does have a "slight" vinegar or sour note. DON'T PANIC or JUDGE LMBO.

After 5 or 10 mins, it is a "cocoa and fig leaf subtle green sweet plant stem" smell that engulfs you. The patchouli in this composition was done well! It give it a dampness that makes this a very interesting scent. I know some YT reviewers say it is a dry scent, but I do not get that. It actually smells like this could be someone's natural body scent; like a familiar scent of someone's home. This is very natural and not skanky or musty.

This is not cologne-y or synthetic at all-CHECK. It is a fragrance for all seasons except Summer. It does well on dates where you will be close or the workplace. Dare we say, "strangely sexy-ish", but wearable to work???? I don't know...

This is a fragrance for the eccentric person-- a signature scent. Something I can see the late great Prince wearing LOL. It is a dare to be different composition.

Don't listen to the haters on this one, which I respect their point-of-views. This is one that will not be off putting too after a couple minutes.
Truly, it is a complex scent that does not scream with its wafts.

Lastly, it does have a "reminiscent" feel of Azzaro Visit!! I don't know how, but it does. Like a person you see in your passing that you must admit they favor your over all description, but they are not you or look like you. Strange, I know...

7.5/10 for its PRICE and COMPLEXITY (the dry down phases)

I totally agree with Brandon below, this is a frag for "the elitist camp of olfactory gurus".
Not that I considered myself to be one but at least an elitist collector. ;-)
I have restocked on this one since I like it a lot and most likely is going to disappear pretty soon.

brandonR

Love at first spray! Dark, Industrial coal and laminate meets a comforting greenhouse of warm, blanketed patchouli and cocoa. Feels moist, not dusty. Reminds me of a dark, dank greenhouse in the heart of Tim Burton's vision of Gotham City.

As for the dislikes? I'll say this much...if you're a fan of Kokorico, consider yourself in the elitist camp of olfactory gurus. When you purchase a unique scent like this, you're not only paying for the juice inside this crafty looking glass bottle, you're paying to wear someone elses artistic vision.

I agree along the lines with what one reviewer already stated several reviews below mine. If this same juice was poured into a Tom Ford bottle with a niche marketing campaign, the love colum would be through the roof. The posers on Fragranitica never cease to amaze me. Two thumbs way up for Kokorico! Straight to the favorites shelf you go!

EnergeticCrab

This is a COLOGNE in all caps. It's very masculine, artsy, and in your face, to me. Another reviewer described it as "intrusive". That is definitely the word. The patchouli and vetiver come through strong! Perhaps too strong as they overpower the cacao and cedar, to my nose. The fig is there but not in a nice way? I wanted to like this one but I can't get over the initial blast to the finer earthy qualities that apparently reveal themselves. I think patience is required here, to truly appreciate the peculiarities.

Donjuandemarco

Today i bought a 2012 batch i get cacao patchouli and fig leaf. But on my skin fig leaf i think is the dominant one, cacao is also there but not bitter IMO as most said. It could fit the spring nights perfect not a project monster but after 7 8 hours from time to time still makes me remember that it's still there from half arm lenght it is not bad for EDT. Unique smell definitely and have a bit similarities with LIDGE, but the fig leaf makes it smoother and sophisticated. I mean if LIDGE is 35 years old man this one is 25 years old.
Lıke invictus and sauvage both good, compliment getter but different leagues.
If you like this fragrance have some balls and wear it on a date i mean what could possibly go wrong...

When this fragrance come out i did not like it at all, few day ago i went 2 Paris on Holiday, and i thought i like 2 give it another try , but 2 be honest with u i really do like it now it is so different, not like other fragrances , thats what i like been different, love this fragrance now it last on my skin quite a long time
i will definitely will keep this fragrance on my collection and will be wearing this winter time....

This is my second review after wearing this, and it's skyrocketed to my favorites and defended itself against the 8 frags I've purchased since.

It's taken Burberry London's place in my rotation because of its layers. The initial brash opening is beautiful and the dry down is like a second skin of earthy cocoa. I feel like a couple of hours in, it dries out and threatens to evaporate. Sweaty, oily skin wears this frag way better than drier, and amplifies projection.

It's now a signature frag for me.
Highly recommended if you're sick of oud's; aquatics; and overly sweet gourmands.

Dr. Social

Electronic patchouli from the netherworld.
The inauguration of the cacao center is a fulminating experience.
God-tier.

Jromas

This starts off harsh and kind of stays that way. You won't get the same kind of sweet smelling cocoa that you get from Dior Homme or Guerlain L'instant. You get more of a synthetic very powdery chocolate. Wore this to the gym when I first bought it, just because I couldn't wait to put it on, and the powdery smell when I started heating up was overbearing so this would kill people in a hot climate. Blind bought this and doubt I'd be reaching for it considering I have LIDGE which I rarely reach for anyways.

@hsuru4u, I think Kokorico never was beast, on my skin performs low or moderate, nothing strong, just the first 5-15 minutes seem harsh, but quickly becomes soft, close to the skin

D1RTY

It starts very earth but wait for the amazing cacao drydown.

I don't know why everytime I wear this parfume I get so many compliments.

Amazing for winter.

The projection is good and its long lasting on my skin 8+

Ive always been curious about this one and finally I saw it at a duty free in an airport. First the positives, the bottle is cool, and I love the opening. Its very earthy and slightly sweet. Like you dug up a sugar beet in your garden and cracked it open. The patchouli is heavy and sweet and coupled with cocoa. Its unusual and striking and I was impressed. Sadly in the dry down it becomes a generic men scent, like something Kenneth Cole or John Varvatos would make. Just a vague patchouli and cedar combination Ive smelled so many times before. I do wish the opening lasted longer. Still if you can find this at a bargain you could do worse. It smells like an expensive cologne. Thumbs slightly up on this one.

iammyping

Ordered a sample, because I am huuuge fan of l'instant. And what an insult to my nose. I must have a broken one. There is no trace of Guerlain l'instant.Nowhere. Not even a hint. It is soo weird. Kokorico smells like sqished potato beetles with a little bit of dark chocolate. Thank god i ordered a sample before byuing it.

Shawnnick

Amazing!initial spray is harsh but the drydown is beautiful.picked it up super cheap and very pleased

Rerik

When Kokorico came out all of us were into oriental fragrances with sweet notes and nobody accepted such bitter sweet fragrances like Kokorico. Kokorico is all about bitter cocoa. A slightly powdery, bitter chocolate with cedar underground.
Time have passed and I came back again to this fragrance. Now it seems that the right time came. This fragrance smells different. Seductive.
If you like bitter chocolate or dark coffee, this is it.

Guinea54

I think this one is great.. Very unique and distinctive. Hard to explain the scent, but for some reason something in this reminds me of burberry london.. I am not sure what is in there that reminds me of it, but it does.. Not sure why this fragrance gets so much hate.. I really like it.

Lomasfuerte

the best 17 bucks i spend
this smell niche ,how come this was not hype
every one have to try this for the price is ok blind buy
is very close to L'Instant de Guerlain Extreme
very sexy women love it

bart4543

kk i ve had this for 2 weeks now. blind bought it because this was never introduced to the north american market and the price was good. i knew about all the hate for this fragrance but since im a huge fan of JPG and having owned le male, fleur le male and gaultier 2 i owed it to myself to try this one out. oh boy am i glad i did and quiet frankly i dont get the hate.

it starts of with a huge blast of minty leafy green fig mixed with coco. the patchouli comes in and it is in this point where i feel the fragrance feels kind of wacky. the animalistic and dirtiness of the patchouli doesn't mix with the coco. but after about 30 minutes once the patchouli calms down and the base of cedar and vetiver comes in, it really becomes beautiful. the dry down is a woody green sweet coco with hint of dirtiness and animalistc qualities. this is not your usual fragrance and that is what i love about most JPG fragrances. after smelling all these new generic fragrances this one really gets me excited.

OMG! I'm a woman who has been exploring unisex and man fragrances lately. Loving the spices, green notes & smokiness of them. This one is just lovely; sweet, dry cocoa with a green patchouli & woody background. The dry down is amazing. The scent has a descent longevity; it wears close to the skin, although not enough so it will get noticed. LOVE!

fanzypants

At first sniff i was not deterred at all by the Super Sharp opening (it cuts through air; but pleasantly). I think the patchoulli is a great middle ground between the cacao and the figleaf. It works beautifully. I'm still waiting for the dry down. Someone said it dried down similarly to CK Shock, and I'm hoping because that's what I wear that for. If I can get it with the beautiful opening of Kokorico, I'm set!

Edit: Worn it thrice now.. No longer reminds me a lot of A men and Shock, after an hour of wear. The opening is wonderful - a dry chocolate vibe layered with grassy and floral tones. My wife said very sweet when she walked into the room, then she said it smelled of flowers once it settled. An hour after wear it smells reminiscent of Zino and is wearable in slightly warmer conditions (as compared to Amen). It takes you on a great journey through different layers!

I'll refrain from rating this. I blind bought it, and I would do it again with more and more confidence as I continue wearing it.

Molko

@icecube, I'm not a man and I used Kokorico and also K by night:) If you like rhubarb, cocoa, bittersweet fresh colognes, buy/try both version:) They're very cheap.

protosv

@icecube I think a woman could give this a shot for sure but at least on me the fig is mainly in the first hour to two hours. Then it becomes more of a cocoa and patchouli your fragrance but it's a more dirty and masculine patchouli than some I've smelled. Still it's cheap enough that is worth a blind buy. Look around I online auction sites and you should find a 50ml for less than $20US.

Can anyone tell me if kokorico by night is more chocolate scented than this one?

This is a first impressions on paper. For some reason near the early stages of this fragrance it reminds me of burberry london. Not sure why.. Something in there reminds me of it. So far I kind of dig it. I wonder why all the bad ratings? It smells very unique. Its hard to put what I am smelling into words.. I have to give it some full wearings to write a more thorough review but so far I like it and it has a smell that really stands out.

richard.price.123276

I adore this fragrance. Like somebody else has said perfectly, it is like "an old friend".

Cacao, fig, vetiver and something that, to me, gives a very slight old school hippy feel to it - probably the patchouli.

There is an earthiness, a dirtiness that juxtaposes so well with the otherwise gourmand nature of Kokorico.

Do not blind buy - well, actually, you might as well now. It's about £2 for 8472ml these days!

cheirabemcom

I bought this perfum recently for my sun (16 years old). I love it and he loves it too. The fig leaf scent is very noutorius and remains for hours.

muncierobson

Some six years ago I tried this along with its cousin (by marriage not blood) 'fleur du male' with one on each hand I concluded I felt a little bit of sick in my mouth, doused myself in fantasy and scrubbed my hands...

It's amazing how our tastes change... Having recently fallen in love with FDM I decided to blind buy this now heavily discounted (£15 for 50ml). It's wonderful!

I was instantly reminded of LIDGE but this is very green in comparison to guerlain's spicy cacao offering (also 1/3 of its price).

It's a masculine and bitter cacao. The freshness of the fig and violet leaf give it an invigorating aspect.

Long lasting and moderate sillage - it will be noticed and it will leave a trail but it's refined at the same.

Rooster imagery in mind I can see myself 'strutting' round bars and clubs wearing this but also suited to semi-formal and corporate events - when I want to feel confident!

Zackkcaz

A bold glorious gem! This reminds me of a dependable old friend. Warm lovely open and constant. It might not be everyones cup of tea, but from open to dry down it holds your attention and let's u know he is here with you. I will always have a bottle on hand for summer, fall, spring and winter.

smoj

Blind buy, a very good Blind buy, smells lovely love the caocao and woody dry down. yum

RobbieX

This does have a lot of character and is very pleasant, but it's also dry and dusty. I would have preferred less cedar and wish it was a touch fresher. Nevertheless Kokorico is very nice and just a bit different.

nightcutter

The top notes are horrific. They smell like a just-creosoted fence. The dry down is thankfully more bearable but I still couldn't wear this.

hitz

honestly would definitely like to try it as it has sweet smell and Kokorico is designed as a powerful and explosive aphrodisiac, emphasizing woody and cocoa notes
as presently i am using manzana l or noir

vonMises

I think this is really perfect. It is like a much better Zino Davidoff, or closer to what I had hoped the Zino would smell like. It isn't quite as dry as the Zino, it seems to be a better balance, and seems to have better ingredients. It has a more interesting drydown, and is fresher and greener, though only slightly greener.

I love how that cacao note is only slightly present most of the time. This is really mostly woody and fig leafy, with a nice blanket of patchouli. I have enjoyed it since the first time I used it, but I'm liking it even better with time and multiple wearings.

Jose Marcos

One day people will understand that in fact you don't need even ONE spray, all you have to do is buying the stuff and hold it in your hands to feel the scent radiation going through your whole body, magically. And that is only under severe freezing condition. But alas, people are still byuing and spraying fragrances all around us. Really.

I used to have Kokorico. I think it's better than LIDGE but not as good as L'Instant EDT, which is the one wear, even during Summer, evenings or not.

biroo

I got a sample of this 3 or 4 years ago and I hated it back then. I didn't understand who would wear something like this. Last week I tried it again, after reading the reviews here and I really liked it so I bought it. I would describe it as dirty chocolate. This is to be used only in cold winter and 1 spray is enough for me.

Ok, so I got this quite cheap because I couldn't afford lidge. It's almost identical. Almost but lidge has some citrus going on but I don't get much of that in here. Longevity and sillage are quite decent. I can wear it now that it's getting colder. 10/10

Ok, so now that I've worn this for a day, I take back what I said about lidge. It's not almost identical, it's reminiscent. Lidge has spices and citrus going on and this doesn't. It's still a good fragrance in its own right but if lidge was the same price as this, I'd pick lidge hands down

PerfumeKing14

when this is 1st sprayed i absolutely love it, then it dries down. when 1st sprayed its a really good sweet chocolate scent on me & i love that but as soon as it dries down (which happens fairly quickly) on me it looses a lot of what i love in it. its a nice scent don't get me wrong but it want that sweetness of 1st spray all the way through

ZZZZZZING! Holy olfactory shock!

The first 60 seconds of Kokorico truly jolt your senses. The closest thing I can compare the opening to is the hard, gritty, dark chocolate tablets that come prepackaged in the popular Latin-American hot chocolate drink called "Abuelita."

If you've ever made that drink, the initial blast of Kokorico is reminiscent of the hard, circular tablets of Abuelita - sweet, dry, spicy, addictive, and borderline bitter. All hitting your nose like a Freightliner! It's very narcotic in the sense that you'll keep sniffing and sniffing to get that high.

The dry cacao scent quickly takes a step back, and the earthy, dirty fig leaf takes hold. The fig is so reminscent of moist dirt that has been freshly dug up from the ground. It's quite tantalizing and not as "nasty" as it sounds. This cool, moist dirt is a shining star for the first 2 hours of Kokorico. Eventually, the patchouli and cacao take the reigns. We are left with a fresh dirt fig + sharp pathcouli nestled in sheets of soft cacao on a smooth bed of cedar. It's completely sensual and very sultry.

This fragrance needs to be worn a few times to be appreciated. It's not initially amicable like most mainstream fragrances.

Kokorico is a fragrance for someone who dares to be different. Someone who wants wear a scent that complements their unique style or personality but doesn't want to spend hundreds of dollars doing so. Kokorico is definitely niche style, and I applaud JPG for daring to make this unique fragrance, but I can't help but shake there is something missing from the sultry combo of fig, patchouli, and cacao. On positive note, it's perfect for all seasons and weather conditions.

Thank you, house of JPG.

This, for me, is a fantastic fragrance. I can understand why many don't like it, and I wasn't blown away first time I smelt it. Then it grew on me, crept up on me and got under my skin.

I love this fragrance and nothing (no, not Azzaro Visit) is like it.

wisconsinboy

I love the fig. I love the dark chocolate. I'm not sure what's missing, but it just isn't enough for me. Maybe it'll grow on me.

KoceFF

I find this very simlar to Azzaro Visit. I like it but i would like it better if the cedar note was a bit toned down. Can anybody tell me if the flanker BY Night perhaps is what i'm looking for. Differences between this and the flanker.

swapnil.bhorunde

This perfume goes very nice with my skin and body...it last 10+ hrs and smells very rich..i like the fragnance..

RobbieX

Starts with a cacao note. Then it's cedar all the way. If you don't like cedar...forget this one. Visit is a touch nicer.

Zetamamman

No longer sold in the largest retail/webshop in my country, a victim of "spray on paper, wait 3 seconds, sniff, toss". This must be tried on the skin!
Beautiful chocolate smell, without the common candy sweetness. Something for straight men- what woman doesn't like chocolate??? One of the very few frags I actually like on a man (and myself).

groover

Had this in a drawer for a while now,
remembering all the bad reviews it got.
i had just hidden it away and forgotten it,
but tonight i sprayed it on my wrist and that great
smellig cacao and green scent just hit
me like a warm breeze, i love this fragrance
and i will stack a couple bottles away in case
its discontinued.

Peagram_82

Strong and long lasting. I won mine at a work lunch raffle. Trust a fragcom member to win a perfume! Anyway, yes I agree it is very similar to L'Instant. I would have to say not at refined but still a decent sent. I feel that they still try to do what they want. For me its not "another one" on the shelf. The strong note of Cocoa is dearing, and few houses afford to be dearing anymore. Packing is unique, and bottle is obviously tailored to attract a younger crowd. Isn't that intresting, because stick L'Instant in the same bottle and there would only be a small difference! But L'Instant is associated with more mature, affluent people.

Sillage: 7/10

Duration: 7/10

Value for money: 8/10

Time and place to work: Evening perfume, dressed to impress with the GF, wife, etc.

Blind test reviews: Didn't tell my wife what it was, and she liked it. Gave it a 7/10. Colleagues at work ranged from a 2 (someone just hated the cocoa note) to 8/10, some love it and want to eat it up.

Conclusion: I wouldn't buy this again, a decent raffle win but I'll stick to L'Instant. An opinion divider, some want to eat it, some want to pass out. Great value for money, check if significant other likes before you buy, or just blind buy and wear with confidence.

STOP! Don’t move a muscle. You’ll lose it….that smell, the smell of sweet, sharp, delightful Cacoa with just the right amount of fig leaf crushed in there to pull off a sweet and sour vibe that will waiver back and forth against your bulbus olfactorius making you weak in the knees. The patchouli is perfectly balanced here, establishing an awesome trio of stink. How can such few notes provoke such odorous tenuti in your smell holes? I love it. I get it, there is a love hate with the juice man. I LIVE it.

When I first smelled this frag, I was like “what the hell is that?” Now I’m at that point where I’m like “where in the hell is it?!?!?”

I think this is one best tested before purchase for most. I blind bought it, but I do that often. It’s a sure fire symptom of a true stink-aholic. You know the routine, order, marking days off of the calendar as its shipped to the house, getting it from the mailbox!! Then opening it up and ignoring everything else in your life as you spray it on your forearm for the first time… and then its either – wait-for-it SMELLGASM or thumb twiddling with your head hung low while you wonder what the hell happened and slide into an evening of utter depression. Such is the life of a frag-meister.

I enjoy this summer days and nights. I get decent longevity and sillage out of it for the most part. In general. This is just one of those that makes me look at the dislike bar and feel pity for those that do not understand the power of the Kokorico head. Next, I’m a gonna to try the “Night” versions.

llloyd

one really has to survive the opening which is a pretty annoying artificial concoction for the first hour, but then a really nice cocoa layered with some woody and green notes and just an undertone of vanilla emerges and it's there to stay for a really long time and blends so naturally with the body chemistry.
wear it just for the drydown, and like it a lot!
i like to put it on an hour before walking out of the apartment so the people around are safe from initial blast which really is repellent.

xaml

@jellybeantree No, not at all. :)

chopshop

I agree with RobbieX's review. This is similar to Azarro Visit, which I love btw, but it is a little sweeter. I'm enjoying it.

protosv

LOTS of cacao and patchouli. Starts off intensely with cacao dominating along with the fig leaf, which subsides about 30-45 minutes into development. I agree with others below that there is a sweet tobacco-like accord, which is not listed in the notes. So much so that I'd say this is quite similar to CK One Shock for Him (a sleeper hit 'round these parts) but with added bitter cocoa. I can also see resemblence to LIDGE, although Kokorico is somewhat less refined and is more "confused" with clumsier transition between notes. I don't really get any cedar, and veitver is barely there through the mid. However, the patchouli, while overshadowed during the opening phase, takes over the base with its pungent aroma. It's not a smooth refined patchouli either (see Zegna's Javanese Patchouli), so you have to be prepared for a little bit of "raw" sharpness to the base. Projection is moderate for me, and longevity is excellent, 8h on my skin, which is a lot for me. I can definitely see how this is a polarizing scent, but all that said, I'm firmly in the love it camp! It's rather unique, and for the price (I got it for USD $17 online for 50ml), definitely worth a blind buy! Even if you don't like it, if nothing else, you'll be exposed to something uncommon, entirely different, and new. Which to me is what the fragrance game/journey is all about.

RobbieX

Kokorico is a grower. Wore it several times now. I like it a lot. It's got character!

RobbieX

Just tried this. It has a very noticeable opening of cacao and woods. In the dry down, the cacao disappears and a strong cedar note with spices comes through. It is reminiscent of Azzaro Visit but sweeter. There is another spicy note in there too that just makes this a little nicer that Visit. Projection and longevity are good. I just wish the cedar note was less strong and the patchouli note more noticeable. Overall, Kokorico is a pleasant, woody and spicy fragrance. I already own Visit and hoped that this would have a more "Zino" type drydown.

Having said all that.......I will give it more time before I judge it totally..... as some people have advised here.

tavo

This is great. At first I was like "this is not me" but I started using it more and it just clicked. One of the best for the night.

Mad-Lainey

I absolutely adore it, it isnt a unisex fragrance, in fact I think it is deeply masculine, strong, earthy but theres something about it that makes me gag for more and more.
I love it on my lifetime companion, his skin scent combines well with all fragrances but this particular one makes me want to purrrr and snuggle in his arms.
I love the earthy cocoa note, not chocolate-alike, more like a dried cocoa pod and sensual patchouli. This juice is absolutely addictive, I love wearing it on cold days or evenings.
To me its a winner, long lasting, great projection, compliment generator.
Im head over heels with this one!

Endymion

It used to be very expensive when it was released, now it sells for pennies which is a sign it's getting discontinued (unfortunately).

steven.maynes

this is currently available in the UK for around 12.99GBP...I paid 9.99 because im shrewd like that :p to me, the packaging alone is worth a few quid on its own, the bottle is ace, it has a humble place in my collection to look forward to, the liquid itself...distinctive, interesting on many layers, and most tasty on the dry down. Part of me wants to compare it to a tom ford private collection blend I have experimented with involving either tobacco oud or vanille and italian cypress or plum japonsaise.... I obviously dont remember, and like my writing, Kokorico is obviously not all the way there...but by god, after all is said and done, after a few hours I detect a similar warm, yummy richness, worth the pennies! ...were i to concentrate this solution a little more...i would have something my girlfriend might struggle to place (ie niche or, pretty damn cheap) - if you can afford it, dive in. smash it on after a shower and you will thank yourself later

deathpill

Although I enjoy the top notes of this one too, I totally get why some may hate it, but look past that, the top on this doesn't last as long as A*men's (my fav scent from top to bottom) but the dry down is awesome. Yes the cocoa and greens are in a conflict but that's what makes this interesting. It will make you think. I've never been a fan of Le Male although I own a bottle, I think it's mediocre, whereas this one is very interesting and the only similarity it has with LIDGE is the cocoa note which is similar. All I'm saying is give it time and let it grow on you, I know it will.

Edit: The projection is crazy on this one, although I like it, it does have a synthetic metallic vibe.

valentinocerca.amore

profumo eccellente e confezione molto bella molto sottovalutato, si trova in rete a prezzi stracciati da tenere assolutamente nella collezione.

TouchyMonkey

If the devil wears aftershave he wears Kokorico.

I love it.

matej.jedvaj

i tried this one about 2 years ago and it was like pepper to my nose...but as always i gave it a second chance today and by my amazement i really loved it......i guess this one is not for very young guys, i'm 21 now so my age up, anyway all i could smell now the second time is cocoa.....warm, not too sweet cocoa, slightly like dark cooking chocolate....i might rethink about buying it :)

Molko

I recently made another test with Kokorico and it was a good decision, because when I tried it early I wasn't impressed, on my skin was bitter and dry with low/weak sillage and lasting, but few days ago I sprayed again on my hand and it was sweeter and more pleasant. I don't understand people why hate this fragrance, it's quite similar to Guerlain Instant extreme, but I find Kokorico more modern composition. I think it can be use all year and all day, it's not so harsh or overhelming, dry bitter cacao powder, just a little sweetness, fresh but has depth, not a funny scent, rather sad IMHO.
The bottle is very original and unique, my fav color is black, so I think it's stylish and suits to me.
I purchased it after the testing:)
update: I enjoy the smell of Kokorico, but on my skin doesn't project well, lasting is also moderate, pity. My bottle is from 2012

tige60

Really loving this despite it being a somewhat mainstream designer fragrance...uber-green fig leaf opening with the patchouli quite noticeable as is the vetiver...I do get the cacao note after about 1-15 minutes into it...must admit, that I was totally taken by surprise at how great this frag is...definitely a great blind buy to start off 2015...very dark from start to finish...kinda like an ultra-intense version of Encre Noir...definitely worth a whirl if you're looking for something earthy, dark, green, and intense.

Excellent longevity and a rather big sillage.

eu_alin1

Green, sweet, strong.

ecojoe69

Although I would agree with the notes listed, I would add SHARP, HARSH and GREEN. I bought this because it listed cocao and patchouli and hoped they would really stand out. There is certainly a gourmand sweet, cocao-ness that I like but its masked by a very sharp and harsh green or vetiver note that totally dominates everything else here. I kept waiting for the harshness to die down with time and leave me with something beautiful but it never did. Great potency with this stuff but there is something about it that makes it unwearable to me. I REALLY wanted to love this.

And, whoever thinks this smells like Gucci Rush is out of their mind. In what way could they possibly relate to each other?????

Svezzy

I bought it and "accidentally" stored, it was hidden for nearly 3 years.
Wore it today and I have to say that its persistance is excellent and i like it.
Not for everyone but definitely different.

PolyOlfaction

I get it. It's an acquired smell. But to me beautiful none the less. The opening is strong and almost abrasive to the delicate nose. Many will walk away now but those who persist are doomed to ecstasy! Wow! Cocolicious with some tobacco notes i might add. Brings me the image of walking into a chocolate shop/cigar store in Cuba, (could be a place like that in Cuba.)

I will reiterate - wait 15-20 mins for the top notes to settle and you wont stop wanting to sniff your wrist constantly.

Coffee King

A really nice choc-chouli fragrance, that I get isn't to everyone's tastes. I really do like it, the opening is pretty sweet, that doesn't last long, it soon dries down into the notes listed, hefty patchouli and vetiver, with a strong dose of cacao. Very masculine, great fragrance, I find the packaging and bottle a bit on the tacky side. Glad I bought one. 6.5/10

israuseli

smells like A*men
too harsh, I don't like it.

ArkangeL

Fragrances that involve vetiver typically turn mephitic on me. I enjoyed Kokorico, that is until it dried down. While savoring the moment, I found that this fragrance is unique... yes, but a hybrid of L'Instant de Guerlain Pour Homme and Marc Jacobs' classic for men. This could have been the great start of a Gaultier unisex line, as I find fig, cacao and patchouli to be utterly genderless.

mortezaa

Very similar to Azzaro Visit but a bit sweeter.

bmantrippy

I really wanted to like this fragrance. It got good reviews, likeable notes, and good longevity and sillage. Picked this one up fro about $25, which suprised me for a Gaultier fragrance. First thing I notice, is that the bottle is BEAUTIFUL.... very unique and unlike any other that I have seen. But, in the opening I got a HUGE amount of alcohol, which I thought would go away over time. It did not. Maybe I got a bad bottle? I smell cacao and fig etc. but the alcohol is so overpowering and unbearable!

Overall --

Scent 5/10
Longevity 7.5/10
Sillage 7/10

The bottle is worth the whole buy.

Scent is not bad, but the alcohol is so malicious.

Kokomander

Love this unique juice! One of my favorites for some reasons. This gives me power and energy like no other. I feel like i own the place with this one.

At first i wasnt sure, especially with those super harshass top notes.
But it grew on me like no other, it has this delicious cacao vibe to it, so yummy.
Only problem with it is that i hardly reach for it, and i sometimes struggle finding a good occasion for it.

Bro tip : never wear this fragrance because it just was there, otherwise it'll wear you instead lol. Only wear it if you're feeling bold and daring, and trust me it will never let you down.

magicnose

Well blow me down if it isn't that horrible molecule from Straight to Heaven and Idole De Lubin. This shrill, piercing molecule is like a bullet to the brain. It's meant to be a sexy, boozy cedar sort of thing - but it's obnoxious and screamy. I was really surprised Annick Menardo is behind this one.

Sometimes modern perfumery makes me throw my hands up and shout "What are they thinking?". Some of these aromachemicals nowadays....just nasty...same thing with Aventus - god awful shrieking pong with all the subtlety of Johnny Rotten singing through a loudhailer.

John Mason

A provoking bottle with unusual smell. A nice blend of fig leaves and cacao. Long lasting. I recommend to smell before buying.

tavo

When I first got it I didnt know what to do with it, I found it to be very diferent and quite strange for what I normally use, then I started experimenting with it, and discovered that with this one, less is more, tHat people actually enjoy it in the night and that its an overall great fragance. It projects really really well, and it can be cloying if you use too much. The kind of fragance that grows on you. Give it a chance cuz its something else.

Surrealist

I like this stuff here, sweetness , fig leaf , cacao all together compose a semi sweet dry cacao powdery scent that
is not for every day, basically its not for day use even though they have released a night version ,I think they are both for night use .
I like it, it different ,its strong and lasts.
oh and as for the similarities with L'Instant...just the cacao note...they are totally different style scents,
L'Instant is sophisticated , well blended with citruses on opening and then gets close to the skin (at least on mine)
and this one is loud and projects quite well throughout its lasting time.
I like it!!!

tabularasaus

Just received this fragrance yesterday. Honestly, I can't figure out why there are so many negative reviews. Nothing exactly groundbreaking here, but not offensive by any means. From the first initial spray, I thought to myself, this is somewhat of a dialed in version of B*Men. B*Men was never a fragrance I particularly enjoyed, so it took me a moment to sit back and soak in what Kokorico was offering me. After an hour I was sold.

season: Preferably Fall and Spring perhaps. Not exactly a summer or winter fragrance here
occasion:casual or night out
sprays:2-3
scent:7/10
longevity:6/10
projection:8/10
sillage:7/10
versatility:6/10
overall:38/50

Bigsly

Just a dab sampling so far. There is a bit of B*Men present in this one, but not the anise note. There are also some obvious aroma chemicals here, but these don't seem to bother me, though it might happen with a regular wearing. It's a little sweet and vanillic, but I don't get much cocoa. Overall, at current prices, this seems like an excellent deal for someone looking for a gourmand that is a bit different, but still pleasant (not like with A*Men's tar note, that many dislike).

UPDATE: This is quite similar to L'Instant Homme, but the aroma chemicals are more obvious here, though these don't bother me too much (unlike too much iso e super), and the scent lasts a long time (though you might not think so if you can't detect these chemicals). I find the Guerlain to be a bit unbalanced whereas this one seems just right, again, if you don't mind the use of aroma chemicals here.

andrepoernomo

I got this bottle at "Buy 1 Get 1 Free" promo at a department store. The other one I got was JPG Le Male, and I had to choose something else from the same brand. It was between Kokorico, Le Beau Male, and Le Male Terrible. I went for this one because I thought it has the most distant scent compared to Le Male.
At that time I've never bought a designer fragrance before. I was still new to the game and didn't really know all that much or what I was looking for.
When I first sprayed this I thought "Wow, it's so peculiar!" Nothing like I've smelt before. It's dark and bitter. Woody and pungent. After it dried down, a bitter cocoa note emerged and I was starting to like it. The opening notes can be very intrusive and I would imagine not everyone would be into this. I would say this one is an acquired taste.
I think Kokorico is perfect for night time and special evening occasions, for people who are daring, want to be different and break away from the pack.
I personally love it now and wish I could wear it more often (unfortunately I don't have many evening occasion to go to :P), so sometimes I would spray it before I go to bed at night and immerse myself in a dark and mysterious world of Kokorico.

louisminaj

I know a lot of people hate this, but I'm actually growing to love it! I just love the way the cocoa and patchouli mix! It has this addictive sweet yet dirty smell to it that I find brilliant! It has wonderful projection and lasting power and beautiful progression! I must say that you need to try it and give it time before you outright judge it because it is a lovely fragrance!

lexi.malevolent

Blind bought this as I collect Gaultier perfumes/bottles. I gave it to my boyfriend who actually quite likes it (if he didn't, I was going to use it myself as he only likes overtly masculine scents - I took a punt that it would be though as most men's fragrances in black bottles tend to be quite heavy and masculine). It is very strong on first spray and if trying in a store, I can see why someone would immediately hate it or find it a bit generic. However, over the longevity of the fragrance, it becomes more complex and the silage draws closer to the body.
A love for me.

vonMises

Scary and beautiful at the same time. This shares aspects of Zino and Varvatos's original, but without the sweetness. A niche-feeling sort of character, a bit challenging, it's a little surprising this made it to the commercial market. A great fragrance. Longevity is astounding.

aleksandar.dragas6

dirty cocoa/patchouli bomb. addictive.

diego.rzse

It's different, all that anyone can tell from the fist spray.
It would be on the same "Le Male" shelf if it wasn't for the cocoa and fig leaf (not the fruit, the leaf itself), it's a blast in the beginning and it lasts for a while until the drydown comes and changes a little bit of the strong cacao note, but there's still some sourness in it which I can't identify what it is.
It's NOT a blind buy! It's like blind buying Narciso Rodriguez For Him or Angel Men.
Like I said, it's different. A love or hate juice.

mfeezy

I don't understand the negativity associated with this. I love the scent (particularly the cacao) and the longevity. It's probably better suited for winter...

wesleyhclark

Very strongly cacao, very gourmandy and very nice - if you like that sort of thing. I've decided that I do; A-Men finally sold me. (I have the Pure Malt flanker.) My wife also likes it, but thinks it a bit too soft for me; she thinks it would work better as a woman's perfume. I'm inclined to agree.

Not sure whether or not I'd buy myself a bottle of this.

It reminds me somewhat of CK Shock, only without the tobacco note.

Interesting bottle!

mildspicej17u55l

Also I have to add, whatever you do, do not wear this in the summer especially if you live in Arizona during the monsoons when its hot and humid. I made the mistake of wearing this during when it was hotter than hell and lemme tell ya I cleared off a city block. This stuff is potent. Sill love it though :)

tavo

I dont know if I love ir or I hate it, sometimes I liked it sometimes it gives me a headache, but I can never find an occation to wear it. Probably in a biker hell angels type of guy this would fit. A lot of people describe this as a gourmand but to me its more powdery than it is sweet and its more dry than it is powdery. The midnnotes are the best way to describe this, patchuli and cacao in that order.

mildspicej17u55l

Jean Paul Gaultier, you've done it again! A very unique, sensual creation. This one is like black coffee. You either have the taste for it but you don't. I appreciate the subtle, healthy sexuality that Jean Paul Gaultier puts into they're fragrances and packaging with exception to the soup can container. Like Fleur Du Male, this is very natural. And not synthetic natural like the cheap male colognes of yesteryear. On my skin its very musky cocoa powder with cedar which is fantastic. I have to say though i was a little concerned when i smelled it before i sprayed it. The bottle i absolutely love. In fact thats pretty much what sold me on it. From the back of the head it looks like the oh so popular Le Male torso profile. I also like the throwback to the 80s look with the shiny black enamel, red makeup smear/paint font and smoky silver sprayer. So far I set this as I like. Once I wear it more, im sure it will end up in the love sooner or later. By the way, is this stuff discontinued? Because i've never seen it in a department store, perfume store or any big box store. Instead I found it in ross.

JohnB2014

Not bad, a winter fragrance.Lots of cacao.

7/10.

t for two

Love it! Very sexy! This is coming from a woman! Need a little time to develop... and the patchouli to settle down. i don't get the negative reviews here at all! It is not your usual main stream frag! It is unisex i think , not so crazy about the bottle though.

Yosa

Love the bottle. Love Jean Paul Gaultier. The scent, however, I did not love. It was simply too cacao for me. No dimension. What a disappointment!

OKcololo

So... Kokorico. Where to begin? A huge, weirdly perfumey(salicylate? musk?), incredibly cocoa-smelling thing WITHOUT the terrible cheap chocolate effect of Must (Cartier) probably due to the lack of vanilla, with a strong chili/pimento contrast that makes everything headier still. I was given a bottle for christmas a few years back and it's still more than half full! That might sound like a mouthful but in small doses its actually quite interesting and very distinctive. It's also quite long lasting. I'd reccomend it, especially since it would seem its made with quality materials and doesn't cost an arm and a leg. Give it a go, and take it easy on the atomizer button. Three and a half out of five. 3.5/5

kaysee

Woody and cocoa.
I get it why people say it reminds them of LIDGE. But it's a more dry/bitter version of it.
Longevity not that great on me.

renzo77

this fragrance I like all gaultier bottles are beautiful and this more so this is different than l'instant another scent as strong as good something is paul jean ebay thanks I'll buy another Kokorico I take 10 times and smells much hard hours and is superior to those of crap and Bvlgaris, armani, hugos boss or those not smell anything

Verry good fragrance ! Love it !

Scent 10/10 , a dark cacao with fresh cut grass opening , harsh open , but still verry nice , verry similar scent with Guerlain L'instant De Guerlain Extreme at opening , but moddern .

Longevity 8/10 last a long time

Projects 8/10 verry good.

Price 10/10 30$ ? ... guerlain is 90$ so ..

Overall 8/10 , why ? becouse this is a special scent and i dont know why , many people dont like it .

Anshul525

Kokorico is a fragrance for Alpha males... the one who are bold enough to follow their heart and sooner or later world follows them.... it reminds me of a legendary heroes from history someone like Achilles or Leonidas ... it's for man who know how to stand out while blending in effortlessly... and for people who compare it to LIDGE all I can say to them is... "LIDGE if for a multi-millionaire playboy Bruce Wayne while Kokorico for mysterious yet soulful Dark Knight."

Cassiano

This fragrance was released in 2011 and had, as inspiration, the black plume used in clothes from the Gaultier’s Collection presented at Haute Couture Fashion Show from 2006/2007. With a dramatic and somewhat arrogant result, it also served as inspiration for the packaging and the campaign. The name of the fragrance, came from the matins sound of the cock, which inside Gaultier’s head represents the animal's cry, like the conquering cry of warrior or a young man full of pleasure...a total “daydreaming”!

And before start talking about the fragrance, I prefer to take advantage of the name’s choice momentum for commenting on the bottle. Although I know that taste is something very personal, I did not like the choice. This bald black head brings me back to something darker, that could be the inspiration for the campaign and would look much better with another name: “Voodoo” would be a great option. And even comes in a red Tin, intensifying the idea of something that needs to be well safe.
The only thing I admire about the bottle, is the fact that if looked aside, we have the visual identity with the other fragrances from Gaultier and the famous male torso. And just few people noticed that!

The fragrance, in turn, is very good. According to the manufacturer, opens with cocoa beans (slightly bitter) and fig leaves, bringing a mix of energy with aphrodisiac flair. Then, notes of patchouli in the heart and, finally, woody nuances of cedar and vetiver.
Numerous are the comparisons made with this cologne, ranging from L'instant de Guerlain Extreme to CK One Shock for Him. On my skin, as soon as applied, the fragrance has much resemblance with Very Irrèsistible for Men, by Givenchy. But when the patchouli – with its nuances that can be bitter, earthy and/or slightly similar to chocolate – arises, what comes to mind is the aroma of Spirit for Men by Antonio Banderas.

Kokorico is, in my opinion, a cologne of few surprises, in gourmand style, but isn't that sweet thanks to the base notes, which give a dry tone to the final aroma. It fits very well in colder climates or nighttime events.
Both the projection as the longevity are typical of Gaultier. But don't expect a bomb as Gaultier² or Fleur du Male, because you might be disappointed.

Dare to be Different... This juice is good...

There has been some negative chatter regarding Jean Paul Gaultier's, Kokorico. It is certainly different, but a good different that deserves an opportunity. Today was my first opportunity to try this fragrance - while not my typical fragrance (I am drawn more to the aquatic and citrus blends), I find it appealing and sufficiently unique to portray a message, "it is good to be different"...

Out of the bottle, I get the burst of cacao notes that settles into a pleasant blend of patchouli, vetiver, and "woodsy" notes. It leaves curiosity, "gee, what is that smell?" to the user and those who "float across the wake" of Kokorico. Additionally, I would make a pitch that Kokorico would be an acceptable femine fragrance - almost Thierry Mugler Angel like...

With my body chemistry, Kokorico offers moderate longevity and moderate, borderline weak, projection/sillage. As previously noted, today is my first real experience with Kokorico. That said, there is no "Wow Factor" to note, but the juice has the potential of getting that special attention, "you smell great, what is that fragrance you are wearing?". Given the uniqueness of the fragrance, versatility may be limited - I would suggest Fall and Winter as opportune times, and perhaps evening wear.

The bottle is truly a piece of art - one of the "coolest" in my collection of nearly 500 (and growing). The packaging is also first class - job well done Jean Paul Gaultier. The true beauty of Kokorico is the price/value. A quick check on-line shows that large bottles are selling for under $30 USD - a "steal of a deal"..

The uniqueness of the fragrance, design of the bottle, and coupled with outstanding deal, Kokorico deserves a shot. The bigger message - it is OK to be different - it is what makes the "world go around". If the longevity and projection/sillage were greater, this would be a first class fragrance. All things considered, I still highly recommend adding to your collection.

Total evaluation of Kokorico is 4 stars out of 5 stars.

Daily I.M - "Try something new, you may like it..."

It never fails to amaze me how people fail to take any notice of the concepts surrounding fragrances such as this! EVERYTHING relating to the packaging and the advertising is about being noticed! The guy has huge feather epaulettes for heavens sake! Sometimes a perfumer has to respond to a brief, sometimes the advertising has to be tailored to the perfume and certainly in this case, there should be no surprise as to the perfume if it is anything like the advertising suggests. They fit together perfectly!!

For me, personally, this is the male equivalent of ThierryMugler Womanity; completely polarising, what I term a 'Marmite' fragrance... you either love it or hate it!
Although I don't get along with it myself, I know that this is not meant to sit quietly un-noticed in the corner, rather it is being worn by a big, burly, moustachioed, muscular, hairy man-bear wearing a leather cap and chaps strutting to 'YMCA' With the world watching and saying "Wow!" as he performs(that's just expressive of the un-restrained fun and self-expression and attitude I imagine this fragrance to evoke).

It would be wholly unfair to say anything more about this fragrance in a negative manner as my main position was to defend the brilliant advertising concept against some of the reviews below!
(I'm not a fan of strong fig notes and I'm simply too scared to try it because I respond badly to Womanity. HOWEVER... Like some openly strong and 'robust' fragrances(ThierryMugler Womanity, PacoRabanne 1MillionINTENSE, I can pretty safely imagine that less is more and only a gentle application is needed to unfurl the beauty).

I, too, agree with all the positive reviews about Kokorico. It does reminds me of L'Instat original, not LIDGE at all, for it is not sweet but dry or even drier than LIDG. They go side by side alomst as a reflected image of each other, right being left and vice-versa, but you can tell you are smelling almost the same thing. But each one has its own twist, and that what makes them different. Also, I get the menthol feeling, specially in the drydown, and then Kokorico is a bit sweeter. I confess that I am not one to detect chocolate notes in a scent. It could almost be in Coromandel, but even so it's because I am forcing myself to smell the chocolate there, too. So, why people who like Lidg would badmouth Kokorico, I really don't know. Guerlain's is classier, nicer, etc... But JPG's is also a nice scent, it must appeal to a different crowd, younger, perhaps. No need for this kind of competition, at all.

Chirn

Very good!
It really does not deserve the panning it gets.

Scenturian, I believe the menthol you are picking up is a top-note of Lavender.
It won't simply be some "Lavender" dumped in there, it'll be 1 or two of the aromachems commonly used to produce the effect.

Admittedly, the initial burst can be a bit "wahey" but the rest of it is great.
There's a patchouli effect, of course Cacao, and that fresh lift.
It gets a bit woodier as it progresses, a touch of vetiver but not the stark vetiver of say Encre Noire, or the master blending in TdH.
This Vetiver effect gives a bit of depth and breadth to an Iso E Super type Cedar effect.

Last Well. Projects Well.
Quite versatile depending upon application. Not one for roasting hot summer days though.

Much better than you'd expect, especially after reading through so many negative reviews.
The bottle is a piece of art with its dual view thing going down!

rolfii

love this stuff! 8/10
it's very unique imo, i also tried LIDGE and i like kokorico better ! my ex-girlfriend loved it. so does one friend who smelled it on me, it's his signature scent now.
of course it's not for everybody, it's very bold, a more extreme hate it or love it scent.
do not blindbuy this!

ItsonlyChris

I enjoy this fragrance because of the nice cacao smell you are left with, once everything dies down.

The only downside to this is that, in my opinion, it is a bit too strong to wear indoors if it has been freshly spryed. It will proably annoy the people around you unless they really like the smell.

So yeah, the presentation is nice. The smell is lovely once it dies down but it is too strong. If you are thinking about buying this and you@RE in the UK, look around and check prices because I found the same sized bottle being sold at two different shops with a £10 difference in price.

Also, maybe put this on an hour before you go out to let it settle.

willbear

re-review this took time with me and yes first on its not amazing but after a little time becomes rich lots of bitter chocolate, incense and figs. i love this

Houdini4

Okay...so I've revisited this fragrance and I'm not as repulsed as I once was by it. The fig note in the top is strong and green it also has an earthy soil quality then chocolatey patchouli & cacao.
Unfortunately this is still a Marmite (by that I mean 75% of people will hate it!) fragrance the note combination is so bold you'd really have to experience love at first sniff to get it.
I'm in the minority of people who like Marmite but I'm still not quite convinced about Kokorico. It's a brave fragrance which I have definitely had second thoughts about in a positive way.

bazil14

I tried this today and really like this its a breath of fresh air in a industry thats become flooded with one million clones coco and figs open this frag its fairly strong so may not be everyones cup of tea then dries down into a soft cola like smell good longivty and projection and can be found at a quite reasonable price

terreri

Cacao & Fig completely overpower this fragrance for me, was really disappointed. I mean if this is YOUR scent then you'll get your money's worth as JPG once again delivers a great long lasting, heavy sillage scent but alas for me, it's just too much. I much prefer YSL M7 as an alternative, the two are very similar IMO. Definitely a winter scent, to wear this in the Summer would just be stifling!! Even after a good 2-3 hours on my skin the top notes haven't settled down, A+ for value for money as I said but if you're not a fan of the heavier, muskier fragrances then avoid this one.

Tarred and Feathered ?

You better be ready quick ! The big "money shot" in Kokorico appears in the opening credits. The acrid green of distilled fig leaf... poured over a pungent plot of patchouli... complete with garden soil (as played by the double-duty cacao). A compelling accord that borders on the grotesque AND the sublime (very Annick Menardo). Everything after that, is rather anti-climatic. Simply, charming after-sex banter between gruff patchouli and alluring cacao (now, the velvety hot chocolate powder variety)... still entwined on a bed of vetiver and cedar. True, the dynamics of this duo may wear off for some before the scent does. But Kokorico's cacao note alone, continued to drive me "cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs" long into it's drydown! (and that's NOT a bad thing ; )

I can see why the much maligned Kokorico wasn't a big hit. Both the concept, and the "opening" may be too audacious for the mass-market: A scent that dares to repel, as much as it beckons. But the dry-down of Kokorico proves to be a quirky, huggable, and intriguing scent. A good alternative for younger cocoa lovers who may find DHI and L'instant, too dressy or mature.

Distinctive, and easily the most fun to wear in my wardrobe.

DO NOT blind buy this please. Kokorico has a really controversial opening, very harsh and earthy. After about an hour, it turns out to be just a nice, harmless, sweet cocoa and fig fragrance. I also managed to detect a light patchouli note in the drydown. This isn't a bad fragrance at all, but it's really nothing special. Longevity is about six hours and sillage is pretty average.

AbBlue

Don't judge a book by its cover... well; don't judge a perfume by its opening. I love the smell of fig leaf and I love cocoa as well, should they be together? Maybe not. As soon as you spray Kokorico those two notes start to fight each other for some minutes. In the meanwhile I was thinking, 'oh God, what have I've done', because this was a wild blind buy.
The fight last a few minutes and that's the source of so many dislikes. Wait, here it comes... does one note defeat the other? No, you just have to wait for the vetiver to tell them how to live in peace, it will be worth it. Once there is peace, you can enjoy a very spicy scent, earthy, green, expensive, really good and versatile (in my opinion) this will last for some 6 hours, after that spiciness slowly turns to a sweet chocolate, a little bit closer to the skin. This will last some 6 hours more.
Don't blind buy this one. I really like and enjoy it, but it is not the charismatic guy everybody likes, it's the bold one that says 'this is me, whether you like it or not', only few people will love, not like him.

murysusanto

Very similar to Baldessarini secret mission, i won't know the difference at first and after few hours also, this is almost identical.

scentdoctor

opening is too powdery and unsweetened chocolote like but the drydown is sweet woody with patchouli.. opening not so good but the drydown is way better.
longevity 5-6 hours and sillage is decent too

le peeU

Bottle design is beautiful. It is an ode to himself or to his head (JPG) and homage to le male.

Opening is fresh Fig leafs, that I wish would stay a bit longer, acts like cooling mint. Then after 15 minutes or so the change begins. The cacao creeps in with patchouli and is sweet followed up by the woods. From beginning to end it lasted 10 hours.

I describe it as gourmand, gorgeous, and sensual. Good for the upcoming winter and prices are very reasonable since its initial release.

KoKorico is a great winter scent.

Houdini4

I like fig notes and thought i liked cacao? but this one is truly not my cup of tea at all...instantly repulsive! Drys down to bare able woodiness. I'll say this for it it's well presented I like the fact in comes in like a biscuit tin and the bottle is really bizarre too.

beavisbonce

Re the review underneath......what constitutes a "gay" smell? Silly cow

CIOGHIUZEL

I bought this today! Went to get Pi-Givenchy ended up getting this instead in sales!
Totally loved it for my sexy man! Dark, sexy, powerful, posh and hopefully longlasting!
And it doesn t smell gay like the rest of JPG s!

aphexacid

Kokorico? How about Patchouli-Rico or Fig-o-Rico.

I get no cacao. Its patchouli and an actually pretty decent fig leaf.

The marketing, bottle and name do not match the actual fragrance at all.

I bought a small bottle for 2 reasons. First, i figured it will probably be discontinued soon. Second, a lot of people seem to think it smells like Pardon by Nasomatto.

It does not smell like Pardon at all.

murysusanto

So much for the memory of roccobarroco "joint", it's very good in the 90's and one of my uncle's favorite. This kokorico is the same, first spray on my arm it immediately directs me to joint.

Yes, it's gonna last and one hell of a male fragrance by JPG

Great stuff...

Vahagn

Consultants often enthusiastically offers to try Kokorico-supposedly quite interesting flavor with hints of chocolate, which opens on the skin of men very beutiful. But somehow smelling chocolate did not inspire me! Flavor was very quiet and strange on the blotter, even to me that I hear the smell (you would not believe) of buckwheat.  On the skin, fragrance opens with grimly green note, even I think I can smell notes of menthol- camphor and sometimes the smell of herbs. After these comes dominating gently creamy chocolate-very quiet, thoughtful. Smoky and scratchy vetiver gives a certain playfulness note. Fragrance is unusual. Lasting power is good, sillage is average. Separate respect bottle and packaging (very original) which makes Kokorico as a interesting gift.

Peegore

First tested this with several fragrances on release, my only recollection being it was "OK" and moved on.

Then this weekend saw the 50ml + 100ml gift set in tin for £15 at Wilkinsons on clearance ?!? How could I, as a fragrance magpie, resist!

Fully expecting to give this a squirt, think 'meh' and sell it on via good ol Ebay, I cracked open the tin.

And on first application I thought my expectations were going to be on the money. The first minute or so was a bit of a brash cacophony notes, then this settled to a relatively thick cacao and patchouli 'lump' on the back of my hand. "Oh heck" was my initial reaction "I've only just recently bought L'Instant de Guerlain, and now I've got another cacao!"

But rather than be negative I waited. And I must say it softened and developed into a rather pleasant fragrance. Once the vetiver kicked in after an hour or two the composition became more rounded and acceptable. There was even a hint of tonka ( mentioned by others ) mid way, leaving me for the next several hours quite satisfied.

Overall then, a slightly dark, dry, earthy take on cacao patchouli, with good longevity but despite the explosive beginning a mediocre projection. Can undertsand the love/hate reactions. I like it, but wouldn't have bothered at all if I handn't got it a bargain price.
